I really like free things. I occasionally move my music between drives. This invariably creates alot of duplicates. Songbird to the rescue! Here is how I cleaned up my iTunes library.

Download Songbird

When you setup Songbird, do not allow it to Import / Export to iTunes.

Setup Songbird to watch the folder where all of the music is located. Click here for their help page.

Download and run The Exorcist. You will need to scroll down for the the supported version. This will also probably cause Songbird to freeze… for a while. I had alot of duplicates so I just let my computer sit and churn on the folder for a while.

The logic goes like this:

Use Songbird to sort out the files you have. Don’t use the iTunes Library file since that is the one that has all of the bad links / duplicates.

Delete your iTunes library file (yes, this will reset a bunch of play counts and potentially ratings… but I didn’t have this setup). On the Mac, this is under USERNAME > Music > iTunes Library.xml

Recreate your iTunes library. Use File > Import on the menu bar. Make sure in iTunes preferences you do NOT have the copy settings turned on. Click here for the screenshot.

This should leave you with a duplicate and ghost free music listening experience. These steps might not work for everyone… I had ALOT of duplicates and sometimes three or four of one song so I was interested in a very automated and very fast fix (instead of iTunes built-in fixer).

Songbird has a bunch of really nice features that iTunes doesn’t have for streaming and discovery which make it an ideal iTunes replacement competitor.

Found another fallout shelter. I use this with my team to create a shared notebook of information. This is usually information that frequently changes or is too small to get filed into a Knowledge Base article or is just used for one time information gathering.

One of its best features for us was upgrading to Pro and having these notebooks cached on your mobile device for offline use. This is great for when you are onsite somewhere and need information, but don’t have the Internet for it.

Evernote can also take scans, emails, and files and does a great job of indexing EVERYTHING. It can even do OCR on images so you can search for text in the image (think business cards or scanned invoices).

There is both a free and a paid version. Both are great. I hope this quick plug was helpful. Everyone should have some sort of password management to prevent you from using the same one or two passwords on every site across the entire Internet. If you aren’t, there is a free version of LastPass and other similar products to help you out with this problem.

I use the enterprise version with my team to sync sensitive passwords to things that we only have one account to. Now, we can have 30 digit passwords that make no sense AND regularly change the password. Then, when we do this, LastPass automatically remembers the change AND syncs it to all of our team members.

This has totally removed the need to send emails out with passwords and keep random plain text files of sensitive information.

I hope this is useful to you.
